Subway Gawdz, the 15-track self proclaimed “brass house” behemoth of a record by New York based trio Too Many Zooz dropped independently June 27, 2016 via Bandcamp- and we’re loving the sound of it.
Unlike the rock influenced instrumentation and arrangement that weaves in and out of records by traditional “jam” acts, Subway Gawdz and the rest of Too Many Zooz’ discography is characterized by masterfully executed minimalism; tracks on the record rarely feature more than a handful of instruments playing together at once, leaving the intricacies of the record to be characterized solely by impressive composition and musicianship. Title track Subway Gawdz and Missy are defined by sexy, fun, brass lines that exemplify this spirit of minimalism.
However, even more so than minimalism, the most notable attitude conveyed to listeners by Too Many Zooz in this release is a spirit of boundless fun. From the artwork with which Subway Gawdz and the rest of their discography is packaged, to playful acoustic textures of sound which bounce and groove like a nod to classic New York jazz, the trio have created a soundtrack that is as likely to have show-goers smiling and laughing as they are head-nodding and dancing.
